I l Civico Acquario Marino è allestito in una parte dell’ex Pescheria, edifcio liberty eretto nel 1913 su progetto dell’architetto Giorgio Polli, la cui ampia sala centrale un tempo riservata ai banchi di vendita del pescato è stata oggi riconvertita nello splendido spazio espositivo del Salone degli Incanti. La torre dell’orologio, che si erge sulla parte sinistra, conteneva il serbatoio sopraelevato di acqua marina afuente ai banchi dei pesci, poi riadattato negli impianti quando, nel 1933, fu realizzato l’acquario. Vennero costruite una grande vasca centrale, dove ora nuotano squali e razze, e 25 vasche con capacità variabile, che oggi ricostruiscono diversi ambienti marini e ospitano specie prevalentemente adriatiche, come celenterati, anellidi, molluschi, echinodermi e crostacei. I vertebrati sono rappresentati soprattutto da pesci marini, d’acqua dolce e tropicali, da rettili e anfbi, sistemati tra il Vivarium al primo piano, lo stagno con rane e raganelle, i terrari con vipere, bisce d’acqua, salamandre e rospi che si possono accarezzare.

Nel 1953, l’equipaggio dell’imbarcazione Africa ha donato alla città un pinguino della famiglia sudafricana degli sfeniscidi, poi ribattezzato Marco e diventato il simbolo dell’acquario, dove ha vissuto per ben 31 anni girovagando liberamente e conquistandosi la simpatia di bambini e adulti.

In 1953, the crew of the ship Africa donated a South African penguin to the city. Later named ‘Marco’, he became the symbol of the aquarium, where he wandered around freely for 31 years, winning the hearts of children and adults alike.

1953 hat die Besatzung des Schifes Africa der Stadt einen Pinguin der südafrikanischen Familie der Spheniscidae geschenkt. Er wurde auf den Namen Marco getauft und war bald Symbol des Aquariums, wo er ganze 31 Jahre lang frei herumlief und so Kinder und Erwachsene für sich einnahm.

A massive central tank was built, where today swim sharks and rays, and there are 25 tanks of variable capacity which recreate diferent marine habitats and host mainly Adriatic species such as coelenterates, annelids, moluscs, echinoderms and crustaceans. Vertebrates are mainly represented by sea fsh, fresh-water fsh and tropical fsh, by reptiles and amphibians housed between the vivarium on the frst foor, the pool with frogs, the special areas with vipers, fresh-water snakes, salamanders and toads which can be touched.

D as Civico Acquario Marino befndet sich in einem Teil des ehemaligen Fischmarktes, in einem Jugendstilgebäude, das 1913 nach einem Entwurf des Architekten Giogio Polli errichtet wurde und dessen großer Hauptsaal, der einstmals dem Fischverkauf diente, heute in den herrlichen Ausstellungsraum Salone degli Incanti umgewandelt wurde. Der Uhrenturm, der links am Gebäude emporragt, enthielt einen erhöhten Wassertank, der die Fischstände speiste und mit dem Bau des Aquariums 1933 zu einem Teil desselben wurde. Gebaut wurden damals ein großes Zentralbecken, wo heute Haie und Rochen schwimmen, und 25 weitere Becken unterschiedlichen Ausmaßes, die heute verschiedene Meereslandschaften darstellen und vor allen adriatische Fischarten, wie Hohltiere, Ringelwürmer, Weichtiere, Stachelhäuter und Krebstiere beherbergen.

Zu sehen sind auch Wirbeltiere, wie z. B. Meeresfsche, Süßwasser- oder tropische Fische, Reptilien und Amphibien, die sich neben dem Vivarium im ersten Stock, dem Teich mit Fröschen und Laubfröschen und den Terrarien mit Vipern, Wasserschlangen, Salamandern und Kröten, die man auch streicheln darf, befnden.
