T he Trieste coast holds many surprises. From the beautiful bays of Sistiana and Grigano to the smaller, more intimate beaches which are hidden and hard to reach. Such as the stream which lies just below the castle of Duino, set among the fascinating shapes of the high clifs created by the erosive action of the sea, or like the beaches below the scenic coastal road from Canovella di Zoppoli, to the Filtri di Aurisina or the wilder Costa dei Barbari, beloved by naturists.

Among the most popular destinations for local people is the whole of the Barcola sea-front, from the harbour up to the more crowded places of the crossroads (bivio), before the castle of Miramare. This naturally leads us to the mice (topolini), an area consisting of ten semi-circular terraces, grouped in pairs, reminiscent of the ears of the famous Disney rodent. There are also numerous private bathing establishments, both along the coast and towards the city centre in the form of people’s lidos, where leisure activities have struggled and lost against the city’s natural vocation as a working port. Among these is the area formed by the old sea-wall and the ex-military baths and the Stabilimento

Savoia, which were linked by a jetty in the 1930’s. And especially, the popular public bathing area of the Lanterna, better known as Pedocin- famous for its separation into two distinct swimming areas based on gender - which was established in 1903 on the pebble beach which leads from the old railway station (now a railway museum with displays of old steam locomotives and railway wagons and carriages) to the old lighthouse from which the area takes its name.

Among other bathing places in the province of Trieste we must not forget the Muggesana, which stretches for approximately six kilometres from the harbour - leaving which we meet the free promenade and the former “workers’ club” used by workers from the shipyards of San Rocco - until passing San Bartolomeo-Lazzaretto, shortly before which lies Punta Sottile, the only sandy beach in the province.

D ie Küste von Triest steckt voller Überraschungen – von den schönen Buchten von Sistiana und Grignano bis zu den kleinen versteckten Stränden, die intimer und auch schwieriger zu erreichen sind. Aber auch die Bucht direkt unter dem Schloss Duino, umgeben von den beeindruckenden Formen der hohen Steilküste, die durch die intensive Erosionskraft des Meeres entstanden sind,

oder die Strände unter der Panorama-Küstenstraße von Canovella degli Zoppoli, die Strände der Filtri di Aurisina oder die wild Landschaft der FKK-Strände der Costa dei Barbari.

Eines der beliebtesten Badeziele der Triester ist jedoch die gesamte Küste von Barcola, die vom Alten Hafen bis zu den überfüllten Badekais am Bivio geht, wo die Straße nach Miramare abzweigt. Erwähnt seien auch die sog. Topolini (dt.: Mickey Mouse), ein Strandbad mit zehn halbkreisförmigen Terrassen, die aneinander gereiht an die Ohren der berühmten Disneyfgur erinnern. Es gibt auch zahlreiche Privatbadeanstalten, sowohl an der Küste als auch in Richtung Stadt, wo wegen des Hafengeländes aber nur wenige übriggeblieben sind, wie z. B. die antica Diga (“alter Deich“) oder das ehemalige Militärbad und das Savoia, die in den 30-er Jahren durch eine Brücke verbunden wurden. Und vor allem das so beliebte öfentliche Strandbad Lanterna, besser bekannt unter dem Namen Pedocin, das für seine strikte Trennung von Männlein und Weiblein berühmt ist und 1903 auf dem Kiesstrand eröfnet wurde, der vom alten Bahnhof (heute ein Eisenbahnmuseum, das alte Dampfokomotiven und historische Waggons ausstellt) bis zum alten Leuchtturm geht, der dem Strandbad seinen Namen gibt.

Unter den Badeorten der Provinz darf man die Küste von Muggia nicht vergessen, die sich über ca. sechs Kilometer vom Hafenbecken – danach kommt man zu einem frei zugänglichen Küstenabschnitt und zu dem Teil, der früher von den Arbeitern der Schifswerft San Rocco besucht wurde – bis zum Grenzübergang San Bartolomeo-Lazzaretto, vor dem die Punta Sottile, der einzige Sandstrand der Provinz, liegt.
