I l più antico faro di Trieste è la Lanterna, che sorveglia il Molo Fratelli Bandiera e poggia le proprie fondamenta sullo Scoglio dello Zucco, per evitare il quale già gli antichi romani avevano ideato un sistema di segnalazioni. L’edifcio, progettato da Matteo Pertsch, è sorretto da una colonna in pietra che si erge su una torre massimiliana merlata. Simbolo della città mercantile, aveva anche una funzione difensiva rispetto all’ingresso del Porto Vecchio e per molti decenni lo scoccare delle ore 12 fu annunciato dallo sparo del suo cannone. Entrato in servizio nel 1833, il faro smise di avere l’originaria rilevanza con la costruzione del Faro della Vittoria e fu infne dismesso nel 1969, da allora funziona solamente come fanale foraneo. L’ampia base cilindrica, oggi sede dalla sezione triestina della Lega Navale, è stata trasformata da un recente restauro in una biblioteca tematica dedicata al mare.

T he oldest lighthouse in Trieste is the so-called Lantern which looks out over the pier called Fratelli Bandiera and stands near the Scoglio dello Zucco (clifs), to avoid which the ancient Romans had used an earlier system of warnings to help sailors. the old port (Porto Vecchio), and for many years a cannon fred from the Lantern told the local citizens it was twelve o’clock mid-day. It was ofcially opened in 1833, but lost its original importance with the construction of the Faro della Vittoria (Victory Lighthouse) and was fnally withdrawn from service in 1969, since when it has served only as a external light. Its wide, cylindrical base – which today is the headquarters of the Trieste branch of the Italian Naval Association – has recently been refurbished and turned into a themed library dedicated to the sea.

D er älteste Leuchtturm in Triest ist die Lanterna über dem Hafenkai Fratelli Bandiera, deren Fundament auf dem Felsen Scoglio dello Zucco ruht, vor dem schon die Römer die Schife mit einer Signalsystem warnten. Das Gebäude wurde von Matteo Pertsch entworfen, besteht aus einer Steinsäule, die auf einem maximilianischen Turm mit Zinnen emporragt. Als Symbol der Handelsstadt hatte der Leuchtturm auch eine Verteidigungsfunktion gegenüber dem Alten Hafen und viele Jahrzehnte lang wurde um 12 Uhr die Mittagsstunde durch einen Schuss der dazugehörigen Kanone angekündigt. 1883 trat die Lanterna ihren Dienst an, der erst mit dem Bau des Faro della Vittoria an Bedeutung verlor. Seit 1969 dient der Leuchtturm nicht mehr als solcher, sondern als normale Hafenlaterne.

Der zylinderförmige Grundstock, in dem heute der Schifsverband von Triest seinen Sitz hat, wurde bei jüngsten Restaurierungsarbeiten in eine Bibliothek zum Thema Meer umgebaut.

Fino al secolo scorso, oltre a quella della Lanterna, esistevano a Trieste altre due torri massimiliane, erette con funzioni difensive e di controllo, sia all’ingresso del Lazzaretto di Santa Teresa, sia sul colle di San Vito, nell’omonimo forte.

Until the last century, in addition to the Lantern there were two other Maximilian towers in Trieste - erected with the dual function of defence and the control of incoming ships – one at the entrance to the Lazzaretto di Santa Teresa and the other on the San Vito hill in the fortress of the same name.

Bis ins letzte Jahrhundert existierten inTriest neben der Lanterna noch zwei weitere maximilianische Türme, die ebenfalls eine Verteidigungs- und Kontrollfunktion hatten, und zwar am Eingang des Lazaretts Santa Teresa und auf dem San Vito-Hügel in der gleichnamigen Festung.
